El Centro: A Downtown San Antonio Guide

Where History Meets Fiesta

Downtown San Antonio is where history meets fiesta—stroll the River Walk, stand where legends fell, and feel the soul of Texas come alive.

Downtown San Antonio can be fun, have great food & drink, and experiences IF you know where to look for it and if you're willing to walk! Stroll the Riverwalk (even North and South sections), visit the Alamo, the Tower of Americas, Museums, and more all within walking distance. Downtown access can be tricky, with costly parking or a walk required (see detailed maps below).

Our Recommendation

  • If you're a walker, explore the North River path to Pearl District (1.5 miles) or the South River path to Southtown/Blue Star Arts District (1 mile).
  • Park in Southtown for free, enjoy the River Walk to Pearl District in one day, and take an Uber back (~5 miles total, one way).

Things You Should Know

  • Alcohol allowed at Riverwalk level only, not street level.
  • Typical visit: 3 hours – All Day
  • San Antonio's summer heat and humidity can make downtown walking grueling!
